It is an exciting time within the Australian new car market with a number of electric vehicles (EV’s) recently launched including existing models receiving electric offerings and entirely new models that are solely offered as battery powered. Many of the new models launched are SUV’s and a number of these models prices fall beneath the Luxury Car Tax threshold.
Tesla have just recently updated their highly successful Model 3 - Australia's all time best selling electric car. The MY24 variant is known internally as the Highland which offers a fresh look and increased battery range. Initially available in Standard Range and Long Range models, a Performance variant is likely to be added to the Australian range by the end of 2024. All Tesla models are electric vehicles (EV’s), and whilst the Model S and Y are no longer sold new in Australia, the SUV Model Y continues to be a mainstay of the range.
Mercedes Benz and BMW have also recently introduced a number of new electric vehicles priced underneath the luxury car tax threshold. Mercedes Benz have introduced the EQA and EQB models to compliment the EQC, EQE and EQS models. BMW now have a significant number of electric SUV's and hybrids available including the all electric iX, iX1, iX2, iX3 and the hybrid XM. BMW are also offering electric sedans based on their internal combustion engine counterparts including the i4, i5 and i7.
The Hyundai Ioniq 5 has been in the Australian market since 2021 however there has been significant upgrades for the 2024 model year. The most significant of this is the introduction an N variant which is high performance. The Ioniq 5 N has 478 kW of power and has a 0-100 kmh time of just 3.4 seconds. The Ioniq 5 was joined in late 2022 by the futuristically styled Ioniq 6. The Ioniq 6 is available in EPIQ and DYNAMIQ trim levels for those looking for extra comfort and luxuries.
Kia have recently launched the EV9 to compliment the EV6 which has been sold in Australia since December 2021. The Kia EV9 is Australia's largest electric seven-seat SUV's. Both the EV9 and EV6 are headlined by the GT-Line variants which feature premium relaxation seats and 21 or 20 inch alloy wheels. Both models have proven very popular, with the EV6 winning the prestigious Car of The Year award for 2022.
