At MB Insurance we can assist with insurance for the iconic Mazda MX-5. We can also insure the MX-5’s Japanese Imported twin, the Eunos Roadster.
The Mazda MX-5 was launched to great surprise in 1989. It had been over a decade since a mainstream manufacturer had launched an affordable two seat roadster, and the little Mazda took the motoring world by storm from its debut. Beautifully proportioned with near 50:50 weight distribution, rear wheel drive and a short throw manual gearbox, the MX-5 was met with praise by motoring journalists and enthusiasts alike.
The focus by Mazda was to combine light weight with exceptional handling characteristics reminiscent of the original Lotus Elan. Combining this with attractive convertible styling, excellent build quality and long term reliability have resulted in the MX-5 already achieving classic status. Incredibly over one million Mazda MX-5’s have been sold worldwide, a remarkable achievement for a two seat roadster.
The first MX-5, codenamed NA, began selling in Australia in late 1989 with a price tag of $29,550. Initially, supply from Japan was deliberately kept short to gauge customer reaction, however it was soon apparent that demand well exceeded supply and greater volumes were sourced from Mazda Japan. In 1991 the Limited Edition model was sold, which was British Racing Green with tan leather interior, and in November of that year a Malibu Gold variant was available for a short time. A removable hardtop was an option.
The NB model replaced the NA in Australia in March 1998 and was slightly larger and heavier, but more refined. Heritage Series and Classic variants were offered in 2000 and 2003 respectively. The big news with the NB was the SP Turbo model. With 157 Kw of power from its turbocharged four cylinder engine combined with low kerb weight, performance was outstanding. The SP model was sold in Australia only and production was capped at 100 units.
In September 2005 the NC MX-5 was introduced. Body styling was all new from the NB. By this time, whilst still a two seat roadster, the MX-5 had become more luxurious and heavier than the original model. Engine size had grown to 2.0 litres, and during the course of its model run an electric hardtop became available. Prices had also crept up, with pricing at $49,990 for the 2014 25th Anniversary Hardtop Automatic.
After almost nine years the NC was replaced with the current ND model in May 2015. The MX-5 went back to its original philosophy of light weight (reduced by over 100 kgs over the NC), smaller dimensions (length reduced by 100 mm) and a cheaper purchase price (from $31,990 plus on road costs at launch). The MX-5 was now powered by a SKYACTIV 1.5 litre four cylinder engine which further saved weight. An RF model, which stands for Retractable Fastback, is now available. The Abarth 124 Spider is based on the ND Mazda MX-5 chassis.
